Pikfu.com Closing Down

It’s been fairly well documented elsewhere, but I figured there was no harm duplicating it here.

For various reasons I don’t particularly want to go into, Pikfu.com will be closing down on 20th May. Galleries will disappear on this date, but data/images will be available up to 31st July 2012 for download. Live beta users will be contacted privately so everyone has fair notice. There has been some discussion surrounding this on the pikfu-users list (over on Google Groups – now restricted and new subscribers will be refused) but that list will be closed down approximately the same date; put simply it’s been costing me money for a long time and with no income from it I’m going to call it a day.

Sad it didn’t make it out of beta, but markets change and there are plenty of reasonable offerings. I understand the place-to-go right now for that sort of thing is Piwigo, and you can also run your own Piwigo install.

Thanks for the nice words from folks over this decision. Hope to see you around for a jar sometime!

  1. Hi Joel,

I’m Piwigo founder. If I understand correctly, your recommendation is to switch to Piwigo, right?

With your help, we can try to help Fotopic/Pikfu users to switch to Piwigo the easiest way. Tell me what you think.

    Bye

    • No, it’s not a recommendation because I don’t “know” Piwigo any more than any of the other photo sites, it just seems to be the name that keeps popping up. That and Zenfolio. If we can build a small migration mechanism via the Pikfu API then that’d be fine I’m sure – it’s not very complex, we just need to work out how things are mapped. I’ll drop you an email.

  2. Hi,

I thought my photos were safely stored and never looked at them any more (so did not know about fotopic.net until this morning). Can one recover the photos or not? Haveing looked at various blogs it is quite unclear to me

sorry that it didn’t work. I found the upload very easy when I was using it but I switched to Facebook. So I am one of those that deserted fotopic in that sense. Unfortunately that was where all my family to whom I was showing the pictures were and it seemed easier to put them up and then let them know that they were there so that they could see them when they logged in.

    Best wishes

    • Hi Mary – the Fotopic servers and business was acquired by another company called ANY-web, who did at one point have plans to make them available to ex-Fotopic users. I don’t know how far that got though, it’s about a year since I last heard anything.

      • Thank you. My mum always quoted to us the old song ‘whatever will be will be’. Life is too short to worry about the things of the past I have found now that I am nearly 70.

        Best wishes

        Mary
